During the stay abroad, passport serves as proof of the identity of its holder and as proof of his/her being a national of the Republic of Serbia. Passport can only be used by the person to whose name it has been issued.

We ask you to look after your passport while staying abroad. In case of loss or damage of your passport you are advised to apply to the nearest diplomatic or consular mission of the Republic of Serbia.

ISSUANCE OF BIOMETRIC PASSPORT

 

Requests for biometric passport must be submitted in person at the Consulate General. Application procedure lasts up to 30 minutes. It is necessary to make an appointment to apply for a passport on the phone 312 670-6707, extension 101.
   
Application requirements: 

  1. Identification document of the Republic of Serbia: e.g. biometric passport, old blue passport of the FRY, identity card or driving license. If the applicant does not possess any of the stated documents issued by the relevant authority of the Republic of Serbia, it is necessary to submit a valid US identification document (passport, driving license, Green card).
  2. Original Certificate of Citizenship of the Republic of Serbia (issued within one year at the most) only for the first issuance of a biometric passport. 
  3. Birth Certificate issued in the Republic of Serbia only for the first issuance of a biometric passport. For each subsequent issuance, the Birth Certificate shall be required only in case personnel data have changed.

Our citizens who already have biometric passport of the Republic of Serbia need to bring only their existing biometric passport and US identification document (green card, driving licence or other official document with picture.

Our citizens who do not have biometric passport of the Republic of Serbia should bring also their Serbian Birth Certificate and Serbian Citizenship Certificate. These documents (items 2 and 3) can also be obtained officialy but additional authorisation will be required and it might delay the passport application process for additional 15 days. 

A child, regardless of age, gets its own passport and can not be entered in the passport of the parents. For minors under 18 years or age, in addition to the above documents, the presence of both parents is necessary or the written consent of a parent who is not present. Sample statements here. Statement of compliance by the other parent is required when a parent is a foreign citizen; see the example here. Signature of parent in the statement must be certified by a Notary Public and also verified with an Apostille at the Office of Secretary of State - Office for Authentication of Documents. When applying for a minor child, the parents must be identified through a document such as a valid Serbian passport or identity card. Alternatively, Serbian parent registered with E-Gov system can give authorisation for the minor`s passport issuance valid (30 days) through this link and provide printed page with corresponding EGN refference number. 

Cost of obtaining new biometric passport is $ 81,00 or $ 86,00 if applied earlier than 7 months prior to the expiration date of the previous passport.

The passport applications will be processed within a 60-days legal deadline. Passports are issued in the Republic of Serbia. Passport must be received in person by coming to the Consulate General but only after you have been notified by the Consulate General.

Passport can be delivered to a person authorized by the applicant. In this case, the authorized person is required to bring the following:

  • Authorization (Authorization must be written in Serbian and notarized. Authorization sample can be viewed here)
  • Aplicant's passport (for cancellation)
  • Valid passport of the authorized person.

Citizens of Serbia who reside in remote states and distant destinations in relation to Chicago do not have to come to Chicago again to pick up their passports. When submitting a request, the applicant may authorize the Consulate General to deliver a new passport by mail, and for this purpose the claimant will provide an envelope with prepaid postage. Delivery of passports by mail is done at the sole responsibility of the applicant.

Consulate General is unable to accept requests for biometric passports for the following persons: 

  • children born abroad until their birth has been duly registered in the vital records in Serbia.
  • person who concluded marriage before a foreign authority and apply for a new passport with a changed family name unless the change of family name has been duly registered in the vital records in Serbia  click.

 

LOSS/THEFT OF THE PASSPORT

Dissapearance of the valid biometric passport of Republic of Serbia must be immediately reported to the local police and their report should be forwarded withoud delay to the nearest diplomatic-consular mission of Serbia. Urgent action is important to prevent eventual abuse of the missing passport. Only after this procedure it is possible to apply for the new passport of travel document in order to travel to the Republic of Serbia.

Нестанак важећег биометријског пасоша Републике Србије, неопходно је најхитније пријавити локалној полицији, а добијену потврду/извештај без одлагања доставити најближем дипломатско-конзуларном представништву Р. Србије. Циљ хитности доношења Решења о проглашавању ове путне исправе неважећом је спречавање њене злоупотребе. Након тога може се поднети захтев за издавање новог пасоша или путног листа за повратак у Републику Србију.

I  For the issuance of a new passport it is necessary to submit following documents:

  1. Document for identification (valid identity card of driver's license issued by the Republic of Serbia). US identification documents are accepted if the applicant does not have an identity document issued by the authorities of the Republic of Serbia.
  2. Police report/receipt about lost/stolen passport;
  3. Completed and signed statement about the loss/theft of passport; (MS Word and PDF)
  4. Total consular fee for a decision to proclaim passport as invalid ($36) and for the issuance of a new passport ($76) in the amount of $112 must be paid in cash, by card, or by Money Order issued to the Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia.


II  For the issuance of the emergency travel document it is necessary to submit following documents:

  1. Document for identification (valid identity card or driver's license issued by the Republic of Serbia). US identification documents are accepted if the applicant does not have an identity document issued by the authorities of the Republic of Serbia. In this case it is necessary to submit a proof of citizenship of the Republic of Serbia or sign a statement that the Consulate General may officially obrain information on the citizenship of the Republic of Serbia necessary for the decision-making process (MS Word of PDF). If the statement is not signed at the Consulate General it must be signed before a notary;
  2. Copy of the police report/receipt about lost/stolen passport;
  3. Completed and signed statement about the loss/theft of passport; (MS Word and PDF)
  4. Two identical photographs size 3.5 x 4.5 cm that accurately reflect the image (taken from the front – not profile or semi-profile - without hats or scarves);
  5. Form for the issuance of the travel document, legibly filled out, signed on both sides (the signature must be certified by a Notary Public if request is sent by mail);
  6. Consular fee in the amount of $63.00 must be paid in cash, by card, or by Money Order issued to the Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia.
  7. If the request is being submitted by mail it is necessary to submit a preaddressed return envelope with prepaid postage affixed.

For minors under 18 years or age, in addition to the above documents, the presence of both parents is necessary or the writen consent of a parent who is not present. If the request is being submitted by mail, the signatures of both parents must be certified by a Notary Public and verified with Apostil by the Secretary of State where Notary is registered. Alternatively, Serbian parent registered with E-Gov system can give authorisation for the minor`s passport issuance valid (30 days) through this link and provide printed page with corresponding EGN refference number. 

Consulate General recommends to the holder of travel document of the Republic of Serbia to check before purchase of airline ticket for return to Serbia whether there is need for a transit visa for the country of transit. That can be checked here.

Emergency travel document is a document that serves only to return to the Republic of Serbia and valid one month from the date of issue. It is issued to persons who have reported the loss/theft of the passport or in other cases prescribed by Law.

Request for the issuance of the travel document must be submitted in person at the Consulate General of the Republic Serbia in Chicago or by mail.

It is necessary to submit the following documents:

  1. Document for identification (valid identity card of driver's lincese issued by the Republic of Serbia). US identification documents are accepted if the applicant does not have identification document issued by the authorities of the Republic of Serbia. In this case it is necessary to submit a proof of citizenship of the Republic of Serbia or sign a statement that the Consulate General may officially obtain information on the citizenship of the Republic of Serbia necessary for the decision-making proces (MS Word of PDF). If the statement is not signed at the Consulate General it must be signed before a notary;
  2. Copy of the expired Serbian passport or/and police report/receipt about lost/stolen passport;
  3. Completed and signed statement about the loss/theft of passport; (MS Word and PDF)

PASSPORT'S PICK UP

 

We will inform you by SMS once your new passport is received in the Consulate General. 

The person in whose name the passport is issued must be present when picking up the passport. It is necessary to bring a certificate of the request (issued at the time of applying) and the existing passport for its cancellation.

Passports for minors can be picked up by one of the parents. If the request was submitted by a parent with a written consent of the other, a passport must be picked up by the same parent who filed the request. Presence of the minor/s is not required.

For the applicants from remote destinations of the United States who have authorized Consulate General to forward to them the new passport by mail, but have not left the existing one for cancellation at the Consulate General when applying, it is essential that the applicant sends the existing passport to the Consulate General for cancellation. Upon receipt of the existing passport, the Consulate General will cancel it and submit it with the new passport in the envelope that was provided during the submission of the request.

If you wish to authorise Consulate General at some later point to send your new passport by post please send us addressed and prepaid envelope (UPS or USPS only), your old passport for cancelation and signed Authorisation form.
